Bedroom Rug Size Guide: What Size Rug Do You Need for a Twin, Queen, or King Bed?
A well-sized rug has the power to completely transform a bedroom. It creates balance, adds warmth underfoot, and helps anchor your furniture into one cohesive design. Choosing the right size isn't simply about filling empty floor space—it's about creating proper proportions that make the room feel intentional and inviting.
At Alexandra Lauren, one of the most common questions we hear is, "What size rug do I need for my bedroom?" The biggest mistake we see is utilizing a rug that is too small. The best rule of thumb is to always choose a larger size. A larger rug will always make a room appear larger. While every room is unique, there are a few tried-and-true design guidelines that make selecting the perfect rug much easier.
Use our bedroom rug size guide below to find the best fit for your space.
Twin Bed Rug Size Guide
Twin bedrooms often serve multiple purposes, from children's rooms to guest rooms and even home offices with daybeds. Because these rooms are typically more compact, selecting the correct rug size helps maximize visual space while still creating a cozy foundation.
5' × 8' Rug
A 5' × 8' rug is the most space-conscious option for a twin bed. Position the rug beginning just in front of the nightstand so it extends beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed. This allows for a soft landing for bare feet when getting out of bed while keeping the room feeling open. It's an excellent solution for smaller bedrooms where every inch matters.
6' × 9' Rug
For a more balanced look, a 6' × 9' rug offers noticeably better coverage. This size extends beneath the front legs of the nightstand and provides additional width along each side of the bed, creating a more finished appearance. It's one of our favorite recommendations because it feels luxurious without overwhelming the room.
8' × 10' Rug
If your room allows, an 8' × 10' rug creates a true designer look. The rug extends fully beneath both nightstands while leaving generous walking space on all sides of the bed. This option works especially well in larger guest bedrooms or primary suites featuring a twin or daybed configuration. This would always be our choice. As long as you have 4”-8” of visible flooring between the rug and the wall, always opt for the larger size to create more visual expanse in a room.

Queen Bed Rug Size Guide
Queen beds are one of the most common mattress sizes, making rug selection especially important. The right rug helps visually widen the room, softens hardwood flooring, and creates a luxurious feeling from the moment you step out of bed.
6' × 9' Rug
A 6' × 9' rug provides an attractive starting point for queen bedrooms. Positioned beneath the lower portion of the bed, it offers comfortable coverage on both sides while remaining budget-friendly. This is a practical option for apartments or smaller bedrooms where floor space is limited.
8' × 10' Rug
The 8' × 10' rug is often considered the sweet spot for queen beds. It extends beneath the nightstands while maintaining generous borders around the bed, creating the balanced proportions designers love. For most standard-sized bedrooms, this is the size we recommend most frequently.
9' × 12' Rug
For a truly elevated look, a 9' × 12' rug creates a spacious, hotel-inspired aesthetic. The larger footprint grounds the entire bedroom and allows bedside furniture to sit comfortably on the rug while leaving plenty of exposed flooring around the perimeter. If your room has the space, this size delivers maximum impact.
King Bed Rug Size Guide
King beds naturally become the focal point of a bedroom, so the rug should be large enough to support their scale. An undersized rug can make even a beautifully designed room feel disconnected, while the right size instantly creates harmony and proportion.
8' × 10' Rug
An 8' × 10' rug is the minimum size we typically recommend beneath a king bed. It provides coverage beneath the lower portion of the bed and creates a comfortable landing on either side, making it a good choice for more compact primary bedrooms.
9' × 12' Rug
A 9' × 12' rug is the most popular option for king bedrooms. It comfortably accommodates the bed and nightstands while leaving beautiful borders around the room. This size achieves the ideal balance of function and visual scale, making it one of the most versatile choices.
10' × 14' Rug
If your bedroom is generously sized, a 10' × 14' rug creates an unmistakably luxurious feel. The larger rug anchors not only the bed but often additional seating at the foot of the bed as well. It enhances the overall architecture of the room and delivers the polished, custom look found in high-end interior design projects.
Choosing the Best Rug Material for Your Bedroom
Once you've selected the right size, choosing the right material is equally important. Bedrooms are all about comfort, so look for rugs that feel soft underfoot while complementing your lifestyle.
For primary bedrooms, wool remains one of our favorite options thanks to its natural softness, durability, and ability to maintain its appearance for years. Performance fibers and wool blends are also excellent choices for busy households, offering easy maintenance without sacrificing style. If you love a relaxed, organic aesthetic, natural fiber rugs like jute or sisal can add beautiful texture, though many homeowners choose to layer a softer wool rug on top for added comfort.
The best material ultimately depends on how you use your space, whether you have pets or children, and the level of maintenance you're comfortable with. We'll cover each option in detail in our upcoming Bedroom Rug Material Guide, where we'll compare wool, performance fibers, natural fibers, synthetic blends, and more to help you find the perfect fit.
Designer Tip
A rug should never feel like an afterthought. When in doubt, size up rather than down. A properly scaled rug makes the room feel larger, more cohesive, and more thoughtfully designed. The goal isn't simply to place a rug beneath the bed—it's to create a foundation that visually anchors the entire space.
